    The Challenge

    BlazePod had a hardware product — smart LED training pods that light up in sequences to test reaction time and agility — but needed a mobile app that could serve as the command centre. The technical challenges were demanding: maintain Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connections with up to 10 simultaneous pods per session, achieve sub-100ms latency between pod trigger and app response (critical for millisecond-accurate reaction time measurement), support group training with multiple athletes and pod clusters operating concurrently, and run without performance degradation during intensive 60-minute professional training sessions. Previous freelance development attempts had produced prototype code that failed under real training loads — dropped connections, inaccurate timing, and crashes during multi-user group sessions.

    The Goal

    Build a production-grade React Native app that syncs reliably with multiple BlazePod hardware units via BLE, measures reaction times with millisecond precision, supports custom workout programmes, enables group training for up to 10 simultaneous users, and ships a comprehensive analytics dashboard for coaches and athletes — with zero lag under real-world training load.

    1Analysis

    Conducted discovery sessions with professional trainers, rehabilitation specialists, and team coaches to map every workflow — individual athlete training, group session management, coach monitoring, and drill programming. Identified that the core technical risk was BLE stack management: iOS and Android handle Bluetooth differently at the system level, and React Native's default BLE libraries were not built for sub-100ms latency. Designed a custom native BLE management layer as the architecture foundation before any UI work began.

    2Designing Solution

    Selected React Native for cross-platform delivery but built a custom native BLE module — bypassing react-native-ble-plx defaults — to achieve precise timing control. Used a dedicated background thread for BLE operations to prevent UI rendering from competing with pod synchronisation. Designed the training session UX around real coach workflows: rapid drill selection, athlete assignment, live reaction time display during drill execution, and session summary on completion. Analytics were designed for coach consumption — interpreted performance metrics with trend lines, not raw data.

    3Customizing Business Logic

    Built a custom BLE protocol layer managing multi-pod pairing, connection state across 10 simultaneous pods, and pod firmware versioning. Implemented a reaction time measurement engine with ±1ms accuracy — capturing pod illumination timestamp and athlete touch timestamp independently, computing reaction time server-side for tamper resistance. Built a custom workout creator with 200+ pre-built training programmes (organised by sport: football, basketball, boxing, rehabilitation) plus coach-defined custom drill sequences with configurable pod patterns, timing windows, and rep counts.

    4Scale & Optimize

    Optimised background BLE processing so the app maintains pod connections even when backgrounded on iOS using Core Bluetooth background modes. Implemented asynchronous cloud sync so training session data uploads after each drill — network connectivity does not affect training performance. Group training mode required a custom session orchestration layer managing multiple athlete instances, pod assignments per athlete, and simultaneous drill execution across different pod clusters. Performance testing under full 10-pod, multi-athlete load confirmed sub-100ms response latency maintained throughout.
